KRANZBERG COURTHOUSE

Developed as a part of Washington University in St. Louis architecture program ARCH 212 course, this project focused on the relationship between design and constraint. The Kranzberg courthouse is an interesting project as the constraints of the project both guided and informed me on the final design of the project. The courthouse is designed to occupy half of the floorspace of the existing Kranzberg art foundation in St. Louis Missouri. Additionally to designing a new program within an existing building, the interior structural supports were also kept by requirement. While I originally struggled with incorporating my own design into such a predetermined space, I eventually learned to use the restrictions as guiding features. The gridded interior supports became logical intersections for walls, the thickness of beams allowed for the offsetting of walls creating nooks for shelving and benches. Using a similar thought process, the rest of the layout was determined. Additionally, an interior atrium was added to follow the structural beams, creating interesting horizontal and vertical circulation.
